Recently, his article "Reinventing Social Studies" appeared in Phi Delta Kappan in the May/June 2008 issue, his article "Don't Blame the Boys: We're Giving Them Girly Books" appeared in English Journal in January 2008, and a third piece, "They Knew Calculus When They Left" will be published in Kappan later in the year. Kevin has also consulted and/or written on teaching thinking not habits, the creation of learning audits, scope and sequence development, time and resource management in a world of endless meetings, how corporate models and methods lend themselves to education and how they do not, taking data beyond the collection phase, and being proactive rather than reactive. After growing up in northernmost Maine, he served in US Army Intelligence in Europe and in the Persian Gulf, where he led a combat intelligence team. He returned to the United States and finished his military service as an instructor and course developer at the US Army Intelligence School at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts. He has worked as a print journalist, and spent years as a corporate instructor, consultant, and in management. Kevin has taught in three very different public school districts. Kevin is a polyglot, a voracious reader, and a life-long learner. He speaks French and Czech, and can function in a handful of other languages, most recently studying Mandarin Chinese. He coaches girls varsity soccer, paints, is trying to learn to play the guitar, still enjoys golf and aikido, and is a huge fan of boxing and hockey. He is currently a Master's candidate in the Stonecoast MFA program with a concentration in Creative Nonfiction. One of the topics closest to Kevin's heart is the push to get students to really think and to move beyond mere brain activity. He is currently writing a book on the topic of moving student learning away from the simple and less useful acquisition of habits to real self-correcting thinking and creative problem solving.
